How to create a repeat pattern in Adobe Photoshop and drawing flats using Adobe Illustrator. : • First you will need to create an image in Adobe Photoshop. You can do this by modifying an image that you've downloaded from the internet or creating your own. • Save the image as a *.PSD & *.JPG file. Saving it as a *.PSD file will save all of the layers, just in case you decide you want to delete or change an aspect of your design. • Turning your image into a tiled pattern: File > Define Pattern > [You don't have to name it, but it helps; and you can have more than one pattern with the same name] • Create a new canvas (⌘+N), 400px by 400px. And using the "Paint Bucket Tool" (i call it the filler tool) change it from Foreground to Pattern. In the box provided click on the arrow and find your pattern (most likely it will be at the very bottom). Then save your work. • If you need to make the image smaller. Open the original image change the image size, save as [using a new name]. Then repeat the sets above starting with turning your image into a tiled pattern. • Using the same technique from my previous tutorial we can create flats. I've made a basic waistband, skirt and top. To show you how to add fabric patterns to your design. • Note: The pattern we created in photoshop is basically mimicking fabric. You can also scan your fabrics, but then you will need to find the repeat portion of the fabric and scale it down. Which is more time consuming. |
