How to make a Backless Top: 1: Print out template & enlarge it by 200%. Then trace it onto your fabric with a tailor's chalk or washable fabric marker. 2: After you have all your pattern pieces cut out staystitch a 1/8 inch on the convex curves1 of the "front side" pieces. This will keep it from stretching. Then place the garment pieces right sides together, pin in place & stitch 1/2 inch from edge. Repeat on other side. Iron the princess seams towards the center front of the garment & top stitch 1/4 inch from seam line. 3: The Spaghetti Straps are made by cutting bias strips of fabric measuring 2 inches with a seam allowance of 1/2 inch2. The two shoulder straps measure 20 1/2 inches each and the spaghetti strap under the bust measures 83 inches. For the loops you will need the bias strips of fabric to measure 1 1/2 inch wide x 5 inches long, with a seam allowance of 1/2". Each loop should measure 2 1/2 inches. (All of the above measurements have the seam allowance included.)
4: The spaghetti straps are sandwitched between the front & facing. Placing one end of the strap at the top of center front piece & the other end of the strap at the underarm of the opposite side, 1/2 inch down from the underarm [see Figure 1-a]. Repeat this step on the other side [see Figure 1-b]. Then place the facing on top of the straps & front piece [see Figure 1-c]. The facing & the front piece should be place right sides together. Pin in place & sew 1/2 inch from edge. 5: Turn the piece in-side-out & iron flat. To finish the sides & bottom you will need to turn under 1/2 inch, then turn the seam allowance under 1/4 inch. Before top stitching, place the loops at the notch points on both side. Pin in place & top stitch 1/4 inch. Once you finished top stitching, fold the loops so that they fold forward & stop stitch them in place. 6: To finish this backless top you will need to attach the spaghetti strap under the bust. Find the center of the spaghetti strap. Attach it to the center front & 7 3/4 inches from the bottom edge; then on the princess seams & 7 3/8 inches from the bottome edge. Pin in place. Turn under 1/2 inch twice (on both sides) & start sewing at one end along the edge continue sewing to the other end. Then repeat on other side. |
